Staying safe

What other people can see about you
Your state, and what you type. In a video chat, your camera and microphone. They never see your phone number, a name or a nickname, because none exist on 9jaLive.
What you can do during a chat
- Skip (or press Esc on a laptop) to move on at any time.
- Blur the other person's video if you are uncomfortable. It is only on your screen.
- Block to make sure you never meet that person again.
- Report with the red flag. In a video chat one still picture of that person is attached for review. Nothing else is recorded.
What we do
- You never have to give us a name, phone number or email, and we do not ask for one.
- Messages are checked for phone numbers, links, scams and abuse.
- Reports from different people trigger an automatic ban (fewer are needed for "Seems under 18"): 24 hours, then 7 days, then permanent. Bans follow the device, and reports from brand-new devices do not count towards an automatic ban.
- A moderator reviews reports, starting with anything about under-18s, and can ban a device or block a network for a short time.
- Messages that ask for sex, nudes, or contacts such as WhatsApp or Instagram are blocked, and people who say they are under 18 are blocked automatically.
- We review reports and remove content that breaks the rules.
Stay safe yourself
- Never share your phone number, address, school, workplace or bank details.
- Nobody on 9jaLive is who they say they are. Do not send money, airtime or data to anyone.
- Do not click links from strangers, even if they reach you another way.
- If something makes you uncomfortable, skip or report. You do not owe anyone an explanation.
- If you are in danger, contact the Nigeria Police Force emergency line or someone you trust. 9jaLive cannot send help.
